Although you will have to pay vehicle registration tax (VRT) on a car import, the real saving is made when importing a second hand model as you will be paying VRT on the OMSP (Open Market Selling Price) which will be greatly reduced. The OMSP is the price the vehicle is currently worth in at the time of import. The following is a guide for anyone interested in importing a car from the into . Second hand cars should fall in price following the introduction of the Government’s new VRT system in July.

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry is predicting that the measure will bring down prices in the used car market, as consumers move to more environmentally friendly new models.

From the first of July, motorists will pay less Vehicle Registration Tax on new cars with low CO2 emissions, while people will pay more for new cars with high emissions.

The SIMI Director General, Alan Nolan is welcoming the changes as a turning point for the country and hopes people will make car purchases based on the new system.

Green issues are very much in the news at the moment. Times have changed and attention to use of energy and consumption of raw materials is no longer the preserve of environmentalists and radicals. With energy prices rising and more stringent restrictions on manufacturing and waste disposal, it is clear that Irish business will need to adapt to this new environment. But where there is change there is also opportunity.

IT industry grows greener

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

The IT industry is going green and Irish businesses could reap the financial benefits.

IT giants such as IBM, Intel and Lenovo are flooding the market with products that conserve energy, cutting down on damage to the environment and the cost of power for firms.

IT goes green
Despite this apparent win-win situation where companies can boost their reputation by going greener while saving money, many firms are still tentative about making the move.

“The main barrier is cost,” explained Neil Brennan, an ICT research analyst with iReach. The research firm published a report in March which revealed that Irish businesses were happy to go green so long as it didn’t cost them too much.

Brennan said the initial investment required in greener IT products was off-putting to some businesses but that in the long run the savings are significant.
