Microsoft has claimed its new Windows Server 2008 has the potential to dramatically cut CO2 emissions.

The company said that through increased efficiency and a new technology called virtualisation, companies could reduce the number of computer servers they use by having multiple servers in one server box.

Bill O’Brien, business manager with Microsoft Ireland, claimed that upgrading every server in Ireland to the product would cut over two million tonnes of CO2 every year.

It is an important solution because it delivers a relatively low footprint,” Kenny told ENN. Read more >>

In order to decrease their carbon footprint, users are likely to try and extend the life cycles of their products, such as PCs. Whether or not this will have a knock-on effect on the overall equipment market remains to be seen. On the other hand, devices to monitor and reduce electricity use are likely to become popular among Irish businesses.”  Read more >>
