Dell & Maxol go Green

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Dell is to implement a new virtual environment for Maxol as the Irish-owned oil company moves towards a green strategy. Paul Kenny, Global Infrastructure Consulting Services Manager for Dell Ireland, said the deal, which aims to meet Maxol’s data storage, business continuity and consolidation needs, “ticks all the boxes.” A value of the deal was not disclosed.

“[Maxol] had a lot of old equipment which was going out of warranty and they were having problems with management of the infrastructure, getting service on it. So the solution we gave them allowed them to consolidate a lot of that old equipment onto this new infrastructure and reduce their hardware footprint in the data centre. It is an important solution because it delivers a relatively low footprint,” Kenny told ENN. Read more >>

    Irish Carbon Tax

    Sunday, February 17th, 2008

Yeah, we agree that Tax is prettty un-exciting generally but we took note when on the RTE web site this week and noticed an article about Carbon Tax.  It is about a new government commission / talking shop about tax -
“The commission is being asked to look specifically at how the tax system can encourage savings, the balance between taxes on income, capital and spending, and options for financing local government. It will also investigate measures ‘to protect and enhance the environment’ including a carbon tax.”

At the end of the consultative process in 2015, hundreds of trees will be felled to print off inumerable copies of the massive report on the findings.  I hope they at least use Green ink ;-)

    Green IT Investment

    Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Some good news from the ENN web site about IT buyers & Green issues -

“Green IT is increasingly at the top of global business agendas, while here in Ireland IDC says the “greening of IT” will become a key influence on the tech sector.

In order to decrease their carbon footprint, users are likely to try and extend the life cycles of their products, such as PCs. Whether or not this will have a knock-on effect on the overall equipment market remains to be seen. On the other hand, devices to monitor and reduce electricity use are likely to become popular among Irish businesses.”  Read more >>

    Hollywood tries ethical living

    Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Well it has taken a while but at last a reason to have some beautiful green girls in the CO2.ie blog !

The Guardian had an interesting piece about the greening of Hollywood including America’s Next Top Model. I hope the Irish Film Board are paying attention ! ;-)

Soif you were relaxing a bit, if you were thinking we can’t possibly have more greeny stuff this year than we did last year, you couldn’t be more wrong. You forgot to allow for the time difference between commissioning and showing films and tv programmes: Americans are going green, and they are going to crowbar that dang message in any old where they can. Give up carbon for Lent

    Sunday, February 10th, 2008

In the UK, the “carbon fast” initiative from the the Church of England is urging people to give up carbon, instead of chocolate, for Lent this year.

The carbon fast tips for each day includes things such as switching to an energy-efficient light bulb, giving the dishwasher a day off and checking the house for draughts.

The Low Carbon Man is taking it to extremes - to read his interesting story, click here >>
